How to Read and Understand CBD Oil Labels

CBD is becoming more and more popular these days. But do you know exactly what you are purchasing?

One of the most confusing aspects of CBD is dosing information.

CBD label requirements

CBD label requirements vary by state. Beyond state-licensed systems, there are no federal regulations around CBD.  It’s easy for anyone to make a CBD product label.  That’s why it’s important to know what to look for on the label.

CBD dosage

What’s one dose of CBD? How many doses are in a package? So many questions!

CBD dosage is one of most important thing to look for on a label.  You want to look for the total milligrams (mg) of CBD in the entire package, plus serving size, mgs per serving, and number of servings.

Milligrams of CBD

Every CBD product package should clearly state the total amount of CBD in milligrams contained in the entire package. A milligram is one-thousandth of a gram.  When packaging states the total number of CBD in milligrams, it refers to the total milligrams in the entire package, not one individual item (i.e. edible, gummy, dropper of oil).

Serving size/servings per container

Nearly as important as total CBD is the serving size, amount of CBD per serving, and the number of servings in a package.

  • The serving size lets you know what one serving is (for example, one gummy bear is a common serving size).
  • The amount of CBD per serving is what that gummy will contain (i.e., 10 mg).
  • The number of servings per package is pretty self-explanatory (i.e., 30 gummies per package).

There is no standard dose of CBD.  Your desired dose will vary by condition, weight, type of administration, and other factors.

Calculating CBD per Serving

Ok, so now you know how many milligrams of CBD are in the entire bottle (or package) of CBD.  How do you know how much CBD oil is in one dropper or in one gummy.

Let’s look at CBD oil to start with.

Say you have a 250mg bottle of CBD oil.  The entire bottle has 250mg of CBD.  Usually a CBD bottle of oil is 30ml.  This is the standard size of CBD oil bottles.  To calculate the milligrams of CBD in one dropper:

Total Milligrams of CBD in the Bottle (divided by) Size of the bottle.  This translates to:

250mg (divided by) 30ml which means there are 8mg of CBD in one dropper of oil.

You would repeat this same math for any other size bottle.

For example, a 500mg bottle of CBD oil would be 500mg (divided by) 30ml which is 17mg of CBD in one dropper of oil.

It is the same for gummy bears.  If a jar is labeled 600mg and there are 60 gummies in the jar, the math would be 600mg of CBD (divided by) 60 gummies.  So each gummy is 10mg of CBD.

Hope this helps!
