1. Course Introduction: Hey there and welcome to my course on Google Classroom 20-20. In this course, you will learn everything you need to know from creating classes, adding students and teachers at in class assignments, at in quizzes assignments, and assigning homework. And basically getting down to the nitty gritty stuff of Google classroom. If this sounds like the class for you, then I look forward to seeing you inside.
2. Lecture 1 – Introduction & Outline: Hi and welcome to my course on Google Classroom, The Essential Guide for teachers and students. Just to start off, we’re going to just have a quick rundown about this course, what we’re going to learn and what we need in order to get going in to have Google Classroom running as smoothly as possible. So just first of all, before we begin, what is Google Classroom? I’m sure you know already if you’re here, but if you’re still not sure about maybe what exactly it’s far. We’ll just have a quick look here. So Google Classroom is a free web service developed by Google for schools that aims to simplify creating, distributing, and grading assignments in a paper this way. And the primary purpose of Google Classroom to streamline the process of sharing files between teachers and students. Okay? So the whole idea behind Google classroom was a teacher would walk into a classroom full of students. And there would have, essentially, we would eliminate the use of copybooks, paper, all of that sort of stuff to essentially move at all to digital platform. So when the teacher, it gives homework to the students, it’s given using assignments, using Google Classroom. And then the students from their end, using a computer would access the assignments and complete them from there. So it’s removing the use of paper and carrying big bags of books around the place really, you know. So essentially this is turn out to be a fantastic way to teach. And especially in times where you might not be able to meet your class. And you need to teach remotely, for example. So there’s a few things we’re going to look over on this course. We’re going to look at creating classes on Google Classroom. So this means, you know, if you’re a biology, biology teacher, let’s create a biology class. And if you’re a music teacher, let’s create a class for your music students. Once we have that glass created, we’re going to configure to class, changed the theme, the settings, and the notifications around that. Then when everything is ready, we’re going to enroll our students. So at the moment, you have your class created, your teacher, but we need students in that class. And there’s a couple of ways of doing that also to get your students all logged in and ready to go. Then once we have our students in there, we need to create assignments. So this is homework, maybe material you want to give them research material, quizzes, all of that sort of stuff. You can create your assignments as a teacher and post them on your class so your students can access them. Now once your assignments are created, your students can then and do what they need to do and interact and submit answers to the assignments. And essentially do all the work from their end and give the teacher what they need at once that’s finished, then essentially, we’re looking at how to grade the homework, for example. And also we’re going to look at how Google Drive interacts with Google classroom that supports the class content. So for example, you know, if you’re giving a classroom a, an essay to write, the student’s needs to provide that essay in some sort of format. Be it Google Doc, Microsoft Word, file, anything like that. And Google Drive is responsible responsible for hosting all of those files. Okay. And when we look at all of this and grading the work and giving back results, then we will look at streamlining the whole Google classroom experience. So when it comes to requirements, it’s very straightforward. What you need and what your students need. Our Google accounts, ok, so this, they come in many different shapes and forms. You can use Google Classroom. Would any of the following be it a G Suite account? And if you don’t know what that is, that’s fine. If you’re using a consumer account, you might be more familiar with this one. And this is what we’re going to use for the duration of this course. They’re called gmail.com accounts. So if you have something or another at gmail.com, this is the account you’ll be using and we’ll be using for this course as well. So your students and the teachers would be using their own Gmail accounts. Now if you’re in a school and you guys use a Google accounts, but in a school scenario. So lets say john at West High School.edu. You can also use Google Classroom. And you can actually use a little bit more functionality when you’re in a school account. So check with your administrator in your school, your IT administrator. Check if you’re using Google, sorry, G Suite for Education and you’ll be able to use classroom also with that. And this will apply to those counts also. Now, for teachers and students, you would of course need a computer with an internet connection to submit and create assignments and interact and furnace course, it would be beneficial to have some basic knowledge of Google Docs, Sheets, Slides, and forms. And I have a course on a Google Drive. But you will find plenty of knowledge out there, even on YouTube or online on how to use these. We will touch on how to use Google Docs, Sheets, Slides, and forms throughout this course. But the best thing I can advise for you is to just jump into those and have fun with them. But don’t worry about it for now. We’ll cover what we need to know as we go through this course. And if you need to know more, you want to learn more about these services. 3. Lecture 2 – Opening Classroom & Creating a Class: Hey there, welcome to our first video tutorial on how to use Google Classroom 20-20. And we’ll jump right in. So at the moment I have a Chrome browser window opened. Now if you’re not using Chrome browser, you can use any other browser. But I do recommend using Chrome browser as it’s built by Google as well. So it works best with classroom. Now, for us to use Google Classroom, we will need a Google account. So that means you could be using a gmail.com account and that’s absolutely fine. Or maybe your organization or your school is already using Google accounts under your school name. So you’ll know that when you go to your work email that it shows up like Gmail, for example, has the same interface. And if you’re not sure again, you can check with your IT. But generally, what we’ll do here is we’re going to use a gmail.com account for this instruction. So what I have is I’ve created two accounts, okay. I’ve created a teacher account, and I’ve created an account for our students. So our fake student and our fake teacher. So what I need to do now is I need to go to Google Classroom and sign in with our teacher account. Ok, so the best ways to go to Google Classroom is to go to your URL bar at the top of the browser, okay? And type this in. We’re going to go classroom dot google.com. And as you can see, I’ve been there before. So it comes up with some suggestions. Okay? Now it says here for education, here we are, denovo all of the tips and tricks and it tells us even more about it. So have a reach for this if you haven’t already. But for now we’ll just go to classroom right here in the center. Now it’s asking me to sign in, okay, because this is where we use our Google account. Now, I’ve already created a Gmail account for the purpose of this tutorial. So I’m just going to sign in with my teacher account, which I’ve called learning. Oh, let me just get this right. Learning classroom teacher. Okay. So if you have a Google account or Gmail account, sign in right here with it. If you don’t have a Gmail account already, that’s absolutely fine. It’s very, very easy to create. It only takes a couple of minutes. Click on this here. Create account, okay? And then you can click to create one for myself. And it would bring you to a page where you fill out your name and you type in what kind of username you want. Okay? Now, I’m going to continue as if you have done this. If you don’t have an account, click pause, create an account and come back. But when you have a created, we will assign it instead. Okay, we’ll go back to where we were. Now I just copied that, so I’ll paste that back in. Okay. Now we’re just going to type our password. Okey-dokey. So we’ve arrived at Google classroom. This is the first page or at greeted with it says, Hi, this is Google Classroom. What account would you like to continue using? An I am going to continue using this one. Okay. I’m just going to go back there and that was unnecessary for me to do. And click Continue. Okay. So when you see that button, just click Continue when you’ve signed them. Now, this is at Google Classroom. Up in the left, top left inside you’ll see where here. This is the first page you’ll be brought to. Now, if you’re a teacher, this is where your classes show, or if you’re a student, for example, this is where your classes show. So by classes, I mean, Let’s say you are enrolled in a biology class and also a music class and a physics class, something like that. Okay. You would have a list on this page of each class. Okay. But at the moment we don’t have any classes at all. So let’s say I’m a biology teacher, Okay? I’m going to create a biology class for my biology students. So I’m gonna start off by hovering over it to the top right of this page here and looking for the plus icon. Okay, so when we click that, it says to join or create a class. Now we’re not joining any existing class. That’s what our students will do later. For now, we’re going to click create class. Okay? So we’re going to use classroom at a school with students or that’s what it’s suggesting we do. It’s basically saying, if you are part of a G Suite for Education School, don’t continue using your Gmail Lacan because you can use your school account instead. And I would suggest that. Ok. So just make sure if you’re using a Gmail account, that’s fine. You can continue using that. But if you have access to an existing, for example, what I mentioned earlier, if your school has a Google Apps for Education account, you can use that. But we just continue. If you’re using a gmail.com account like me right now, we’ll continue. Okay. We’re just read the terms conditions. Now it’s asking us for some details. Ok. Class name. I’m gonna call it biology at all. Gy. Okay. It’s gonna ask us for a section, subject and room. That’s fine. Denote we don’t need to fill in any of that information. You can fill that later if you’d like. But I’m just going to call our class biology, okay? And I’m gonna click Create. And there we have it. So just take a couple of minutes or maybe a couple of seconds preferably. But that’s going to create our class, which is right here. Okay, so that brings us to our first step of everything we need to know. That’s how you create a class in Google Classroom for your students. Now, in our next video, we’re going to look at adding a theme and didn’t know adding students and configuring settings. But for now, that’s how we create a class. Okay, very straightforward. 4. Lecture 3 – Adding a Theme: Hello and welcome back. So we have created our first class. So here we are on the first page you’ll see, and we’ll have a little prompt here saying, what’s new in classroom. So he says, get ready for the school year. It tells us basically everything without where going to be doing anyway, quite soon, okay, but feel free to have a retreat to learn more if you’d like. I’m going to say, got us for now. Okay. So on this video, we’re going to just quickly select a theme, okay, I’m just going to show you some themes you can pick. And also while customizations you can make with the theme. So the theme really is what’s right here. We have a banner here. It kinda follows us trow To course throughout the class, you know. So we have the option to select theme. So I’m just going to select that right here. So when that loads up, it will give us the Gallery option and it will say, OK, feel free to select a theme. Now, I have a feeling that Google did a fairly good job at giving us a biology related theme. So when we go to math and science, gave us this one by default. So I think that’s pretty accurate. It’s pretty clever now to pick that. But let’s say, I don’t know, you’re teaching a class that applies to no theme. You can update it here, okay? You can change it to whatever you’d like. There’s lots of different stuff in here and different options for sports, art, science, all of this, okay, and some other ones too. Now, I said biology. So what I might do is leave it at that biology one, but I’ll just show you and then we updated to the coffee one. Okay. So you click on your theme. As you can see, there’s different options here. I’m going to click on the coffee one and go to select class theme. Now, that’s changing and it updates right here. Okay? So there really, it’s really as simple as that. You know, you can also upload a photo. So I can look for a photo on my computer if you don’t like anything. Let’s say you have a class picture that you’d like to use. For example, let’s say I have a nice lawn here of a typewriter, or let’s say I have this desk one here, which kinda looks cool. So I’m going to upload that. And we also have the option of making our theme from a photo. So it’ll say, Okay, you need to crop it to fit. Let’s do a little crop. Let’s say I just like this here, okay? Or like the camera maybe I notice is not related to biology, but It’s just giving us an opportunity to try out some different things. So there you go. So you can upload your own picture if you’d like also. Okay. I think I’m going to need up there. It looks pretty snazzy. I know it’s not do biology, but hey, you know, we’d like to keep things a bit different. Okay, so that’s how you change your theme and upload your photo. Okay, so justice, that very small person, personalization, excuse me, thing to start off with. Okay, cool. So in our next video, we’re going to jump into some Class Settings. And after that, then we’re going to jump into enrolling students and the likes. Ok, so I look forward to seeing you in the next video.
5. Lecture 4 – Homepage & Stream: Hi and welcome back. So just realize that when we created the class, I didn’t even really go over the homepage at all, which is completely my mistakes. So let’s jump right in. Okay, so this here is the homepage with our uploaded theme, our banner picture here. Okay, just to quickly go through this page, we’ve got the title of our class here, which is biology, okay? Underneath we have class code, and now this is the class code right here. We will use this code to enroll students into our class. So like you might have saw earlier when we had the option to create a class, we also have the option to join a class. Now, if you were a student and you wanted to join this biology class, you would use this unique code in order to join this class. Ok, that’s one of the two ways a student can join a class. Okay? So that’s just to explain what that means. They are ok. Over here we have our options like we just used earlier to update our theme. Now, as you can see here on the left-hand side, we’ve also got our upcoming section or upcoming column. Now, when we create assignments later in this course, and we put some deadlines until those assignments, they will show up in a list view right here, okay? So the teacher and the students can see all of the act of work that’s going on. So it’s very, very useful. Right here in the center, we have the stream. So the stream which is highlighted up here on this tab is let’s say almost like a forum for your class. It’s a place where you can post to know information or just the status to your class. You can say hello. You can share some knowledge and maybe the students can ask questions here to. Now, when you post something here, it basically is posted to any students that you wish or all students in the class really, you know. So just when I clicked it there, it said, do you want to post now or later? I’m just gonna say I can change that soon. Now. It’s asking me, who’s this post for? You know, it’s for biology because that’s the only class I have. And do I want to send it to all of the students in this biology class? At the moment, yes, I do. When we have students danger, we can filter down the post option. So we can say, okay, I want to post something here, but it’s not for everybody. I just want to post it to a select few of my class. Let’s say, I don’t know, you’re given a final warning to a few people who haven’t submitted their assignments yet. You can make a posterior denote, bumping them, and selecting who you want to see this particular post dinner without annoying everybody else. But generally you will find that the stream is kind of for general announcements for the whole class. Okay? So we have all students selected and we can write a message to share with our class. Okay, so I’m just going to say something like this, you know, high. Well, excuse me. Hi. Welcome to your biology class. Let’s have some fun. Okay. And what you can do here also is you can add an attachment to your announcement. You can add a Google Drive file. You can add a link to something that’s a like a YouTube video or a blog, a file here also, you can upload a file from your computer or a YouTube video. Ok, so this is also something you can, you can say, hey guys, I found this really cool article that talks about biology. You might find it interesting. Here, have a read and then you can attach a document sooner so you can put it as learning material also for your students. So it’s very cool. Now. I’m just going to leave that blank for now. And I’m gonna say post. Now. I also have the option just before I say Post to schedule it. Okay, so I can post now, I can schedule the post for later. And I can save this as a draft so I can come back to it later. Okay. So as you can see here, I can type a new post or I can go to my saved announcements, which I click on. And it’s right here. So I’m going to click on that draft and I’m gonna post them. Students will see this immediately, Absolutely. And wanted to see it immediately. Ok. Very cool. So there we go. We’ve got our name, the image which I can update later, and the posts that I said. So all the students in this class can see this. And that’s really the stream. Students can also post on the stream and ask, that’s a, a question to the rest of the class can ask an open question saying, Hey guys, does anybody know anything about this particular area? And we can change what students can do in the stream, in the settings page. So we can actually block them from doing certain things here also, which we will look at in our next video. Okay, so I just wanted to give you a rundown of the Homepage versus now, you’ll see on the homepage we have some tabs appear for classwork people in grades. We’re going to look into all of these, okay? But we just wanted to look at the stream for now. So this is the homepage, really the stream page, Okey-dokey. So on the next video we’re going to just set up some settings. And I’m just gonna give you an overview of what you can do. And I look forward to seeing you then.
6. Lecture 5 – Class Settings Overview: Hey there and welcome back. So on this video we’re going to look into Class Settings, okay? It’ll be a quick one, but it’ll be very useful, okay, for us to change some configurations, for example. So on the stream page, OK. We’re going to hover over to the top right hand side of our screen where we will see a gear icon. Does that little gear icon here. Okay, we’ll give that a click and it will open up class settings for us. Okay? So you can exit this page by hitting the X on the top left or save changes by hidden save on the top right. But enough of that for now. Let’s jump into the settings themselves. So at the beginning we have class details. For example, the class name description, section, room and subject. Ok, so remember earlier when I said you could change that later, you can change it right now if you’d like. Okay, now, class description. I’m going to say all things by all logical. Oh yeah, oh yeah. Oh my god. I really should have really should have figured out how do you know what? Let’s just say biology. Okay. I’m going to leave that in the video just for humor sake, you know. Okay, so our className, biology or description is all things biology, section, room and subject. Now if you were in teaching in his school, this might be useful here. But if you’re teaching, that’s a distance learning at the moment, which I know what the moment is. A very popular way of teaching since everything’s pretty much shut down. Currently, it’s April 2020 and the world is shut up shop for what? So you might be using this for distance learning. So you might not need this right now. Okay? So just as we scroll down the page here, we also can see the general area. Now, the class code we mentioned already. This is the code that students will use to enroll into your class. You can display it, copy it, reset it, or disable us. Okay, so let’s say I want to disable it because I don’t want any more people joining the class. Ok, I can enable it. And I have my code back. I can display it. So it can be nice and big. Now, this is useful if you’re in a classroom and you are the teacher and you have a big projector up. You can say, hey, everybody sitting at your desks, open up your computers or your Chromebook for example, and type in this code. And you can go here and make it big on your screen. So everyone in the classroom in front of you can see it. Okay? And you can also reset it. So let’s say you just want to reset it for some reason. Someone’s having a problem with Tudor codes or you found out that, you know, some students was giving the code to people who shouldn’t go to the class. You can reset it as well. Okay? And that will, it won’t kick anybody out, but it will change the code for new people who want to come in. Okay, so on the stream settings, we have member to post speed. It will have the options here. Students can post and comment. So the way I left a comment or an announcement on the stream page. Students can do the same here. I can set it to students can only comment. So they can’t create new posts. So that could help you if your students are spanning that say the stream. I could say, right? They’re only allowed to comment on existing posts. For example, the teacher, if the cheap teacher wants to put a post, their students can comment and nobody else. Or you can also say, students or sorry, only teachers can post or comment as well. Ok, so that could be useful for locking down the stream firm any spamming students. Now I know when students are quite young, they get hyper and especially if they’re older students to know even teenagers, they can put silly things in there and kind of just mess up the stream. So this can be very useful as well. Okay, I know a lot of teachers that would just automatically used to setting. We’re just fair enough. You know, it makes a lot of sense. Now for adult learning, it might be more in your line to use something like this because they could ask questions openly and ask other students. Also, that’s a question and it’s a good way to learn as we all know. Ok, so classwork on the stream. So when we post classwork later, we’d have the option to show to class work coming up on the stream. We can hide the notifications for classwork and the stream show notifications, show the attachments to stream will show all of the assignments we create as well later. Okay, now we’ll look at that again soon. But here you can change the notifications and you can also show deleted items. So currently only teachers can see deleted items. So if you delete something from the stream, you can still see it, but it’s grayed out. If you want. You can oh, sorry. Turned us on to see the deleted items that are grayed out. But you can turn it off if you want stuff out of your way and kept clean. Okay. Now, down here we have a grading. Ok, so there’s different ways that grading works. And I was going to look at grading just a little bit later, okay? In this course, when we create assignments, each of them will be graded. And the overall grade that students are given is kind of given a different ways. Like for example, if you have five assignments and they’re all out of a 100 points, then if someone gets 100 points in all of those five assignments, that’s 500 points. But then that’s calculated in a percentage as total points. So you can do it like this, or you can also weigh it by category. So what we can do later is we can create a grade category. Let’s say essays are always 50%. Assignments or let’s say a questionnaires or quizzes are 10% of our course, and then it will weigh it. The calculation will get way depending on the type of assignments you give. Will look at that a little bit later, okay? But this is where we make those changes. Okay? So that for now is everything we need to know. What I’ll do here is I’ll just change something here to students can only count. And by the looks of it, it’s already saved. It might auto safe because I think it’s not giving me done option. So that’s fantastic. Even better. Wait, I want to save that. Make me save. Oh, well, maybe I need to refresh and just pop back in, you might know, as classroom, those little things like this sometimes, okay. Unfortunately it is can’t be assay. Here we go. Calcium can do to us. Unfortunately, that is something that happens with every teacher knows this. Sometimes you’ll get little things like this will happen. Just be 100% sure you remember what you’re doing and click the Save. So maybe refreshed to page come back and jumping. Unfortunately, that’s just the nature of the tool itself. Does not know wish I could do about that. If I could fix it, that would be great to okay, so I’m just gonna make this one small change, click save. And we are finito. Ok, cool. So that is how we change some settings for our course quite longer than I expected. Apologies for that. In our next video, we will have a quick one, quick snappy course about adding students. 7. Lecture 6 – Adding Students: Hi and welcome back to our next video, okay, on Google Classroom. In this video we’re going to look at enrolling students, okay, so first of all, before we can give anyone assignments, we need students to give assignments do. So what we will do, okay, is let’s add some students. Now. The first and easiest way to do this is invite them by email. Okay? So if you have an email address for your students or you have email addresses for them, the best way to do that is hover over the People tab up here on the top. So click on that. And you’ll see right here you have a teacher’s list. And you’ll see you have your own teacher. We’re currently my own name, Kevin O’Brien is the teacher here. And students lists. Okay, now we can click this little icon here with the person and the plus sign, and we can invite them by email. Okay? So just before discourse, I actually created a fake student account also for the purpose of this course. So what I’m gonna do here is invite that student by email. So let’s give it a go. Learning classroom student at gmail.com. And here we go. Okay. They showed up Google sodomy. This person exists. So I’m going to click on this person, which is me. And I’m going to invite them. Now that’s going to send an email to that email address saying, Hey, come in and join this course, okay, so if you have a list of email addresses, that is an easy way to do it. You can actually put them all in one by one on the same window and invite them all. Now, that’s okay if let’s say you have students in, not in the same location as you. Let’s say if you’re in a classroom, for example, you can also invite them all fairly instantaneously while using the cold. Okay? So another way to do that is, let’s say go back to our stream. You know, we have people. Let’s go back to our stream and use the class code like we mentioned, ok. We also have a display option which makes it nice and big for us. So this is the class code. Now what we can do is we can use this to join the class. Now currently, I’m not signed in as my student account. Okay, so I’m going to copy this. Alright, right-click copy or deal command C or control C. And I am going to show you what a student would see. Okay, so let me just open a new tab here. I’m actually, let’s see here I think I know I’m going to edit different students differently. So currently I’m signed in here as the teacher. And what I might do is click Add another account and I’m going to sign in as to student account here. Okay. So what was our student account again? Learning classroom. Student At gmail.com. So now we have accessed Google classroom as the student, Okay, now you won’t see this, your students will see this. I’m just, I’m just showing you this. So you will have an idea of what the student is doing. So if they have a question about joining the class, you can tell them what to do, okay? So students will go here and click continue. And they will also go to the top right and click the plus icon. Now we use create class. What they will do is they will click join class and guess what it asks for. It asks for the class code. Okay? So I’m going to right-click and paste the code and click Join. So as a student, this is what I will be doing. And you can do this too if you’d like, just to test that out. I am now logged in as a student, OK, test student. I showed to Google Classroom homepage for biology. And I am now a student in this class, okay? I can only see the teachers. I can’t see the other students. And as you can see, I’m given some details, not all details. I’m given some like I’m missing a grading icon here. I can’t see other students. And also, remember in the settings we disabled posting as a student, I’m not given the option to post on the stream here. I’m only given the option to comment. So that’s all reflected here. Now, that’s how I would join a class as a student. Now, I could also open Gmail and I’ll probably have an e-mail notification invited me to the class. Now, it’s relevant. It’s just they just it’s irrelevant because I’ve already joined us, but I’m just going to show, see the two ways that just to skip those things, that a student could join this top email here, I have an invitation to the class also. So that’s the invitation I sent it to start to do video. I don’t need to join that. That’s fine because I’ve already done this. Ok, good. Ok. So Whew, no work due soon. That’s great. And here’s what I see. Fantastic. Okay, so I’m just gonna close this. Ok, so we’re done with the students site for now. Okay? And what I might do is I might leave it open, but I might close this web one. I think I’ll use this student one teacher, one for now. I’m back in the student view or to sorry, excuse me, that teachers feel this is the teacher’s view. As you can see, it’s quite different. Again, I have the option to post the code and all of that. And if I go to people, test student is now fully confirmed, does know grayed out icon, they are joined and that’s it. You can get students to join by clicking this icon for email notification. Or you can have the student type decoding and join themselves as well. So you can do it in whatever way you’d like. Okay? And that’s radius. Okay, fantastic. That’s how we do it. So I hope that covers how to add students in your class. In our next video, we’re just going to have a very quick one about adding teachers. And then after that we’ll look into some assignments. 8. Lecture 7 – Adding Teachers: Hey there and welcome back. On this video, we’re going to go through how to add a teacher to your class. And now, why would you need to add another teacher? There’s already a teacher. In some instances, you might need to co-teach with somebody else. Ok, so let’s say a class of students have two or three or more teachers. What you can do is add them to this class so they can also post and correct and grade assignments and interact with the class if they need to do so. So to do that, we’re going to just hover over the top tabs here and click on people. Now, under teachers, we have only one teacher to moments, but we can add more. Now, we can do that by clicking this plus icon with the head, OK. And type in their email address here. Now currently I don’t have any additional teachers for this class. But as soon as you add another teacher and here they will join the list. Okay, so there would be co-teachers, okay? And what they can do is work together with working with students, you know, giving students feedback, adding assignments, etcetera, etcetera. So if your class has two teachers, this is how to do it. Ok? So you can add more students at anytime, and you can add more teachers at anytime also. So it’s unnecessary to go and create two biology classes for the same class of students. If there’s two different teachers teaching the course, you can have everyone in the same place, streamlined, effective, and time-saving, all of that, okay, no confusion. So that’s really it. That’s how you add teachers. So that was a very, very short video. Okay, I’m sure you might have seen that already, but I just wanted to be 100% sure. Okey-dokey. So our next video, we’re going to look at assignments and we’re going to start creating some assignments for our students. Okay, so I’ll see you then.
9. Lecture 8 – Creating Assignments: Hey there and welcome back. So in this video, we’re going to dive in to the crazy world of assignments and Google classroom. But it’s not so crazy, but it’s fun, a fun type of crazy. Okay, let’s jump right in. So on the top of the stream page, we will click on classwork. Okay, so as a teacher, you would click on classwork and you’ll be given a new page here. Okay, you’ll get some tips here that says assign work to your class here. You know, creating assignments and questions using topics, which we will look at as well. And also order as well the work that you do, what you want to see it. And so when you have a list of Simon tear, you can do lots of cool things. We’re going to touch on a Google calendar and the class dry folder soon. Okay, so, but for now we’re going to click create. So we’re gonna create a assignment. Create an assignment. I haven’t had enough coffee today. Ok, so let’s click here. Okay, we’ve got a dropdown menu and we have different types of creations in the classwork area that we can use. Now, number one is the assignment. Ok, so let’s click on that. Now. We have a new window opens for us to edit the assignment for our students. So as you can see here, it says add some materials, you know, like denote to help us with the assignments for the students, but we’ll just click got that for now. I’m going to go through everything anyway. So here’s an assignment, okay? As a biology teacher, let’s just say one of my assignments is to give me a short essay on their favorite plant. Do you know it’s been a long time since I’ve done biology, but let’s just say that, okay. So the title of this assignment is your favorite ALU or ID plant. Okay. Q. So instructions would be write and essay about your favorite. Oh, I can’t see the keyboard print. Now. I know this isn’t exactly a biology thing. Okay, so, but this is just for an example. So we have the title here, and this is where we put in what you with the title of your assignment and some instructions, ok, completely optional. By the way, the instructions on the right-hand side, we have some settings for our assignment, okay? For example, we can say who is this for? Now, at the moment, I have the biology appearing here on the left. That means basically it’s just for these guys. Okay? It’s basically Furda biology class, which is the one we created. And I want to put it to all the students in the class. Now if I just wanted to send this assignment to particular students, I could uncheck all and then click, let’s say unique students. Now, if I had five or six students here and I clicked one, it would only send it to them. The reason it’s highlighting old students when I click test student is because they’re the only student. So it’s essentially the same thing. But you can click individual students here if you’d like. Now I’m gonna kick all points, the grade for this, I’m going to say it’s 100 points. Okay. I’m going to mark it out of a 100 points. So this is whatever this is done to the curriculum you’re using, okay? If you have a curriculum and you have the marking scheme set out for your assignments, for your modules, then put them in here. But for now, I’m going to say 100 due date. Okay? So I’m going to set a due date for this. Ok. It needs to be done by the 28th of April 2020 or let’s just say I don’t know, May 20th. And if they have a long time to find out what their favorite plant is. Okay. A long, long time. But let’s just say 11:59 PM at night. Okay. That’s the due date. A topic. Okay. Now, topics help us organize our assignments, okay, so instead of having a big pile of assignments later on, we can put them into topics. I currently have no topic selected, but I can create a topic if I’d like. So I’m going to call this topic plants, because as we know, biology covers many different things. And plants is one of them. So I’m just gonna say plants for this, okay? And Rubik, we’re going to look at Rubik’s later in a different lesson. But a rubric is essentially American scheme. I notice some places use rubrics. Some people would use marking schemes. It’s essentially, you can provide the student with the system that you’re going to be marking this assignment on. You know, you’re gonna say, and we’re gonna get certain marks for this area, more marks for that area. I know some assignments you don’t provide that to your students and some u du. So this might be useful here to let them know, okay? If you firstly give me the name of a plant, okay? Ten points. If you give me a picture, 20 points, if you provide in great detail why you like it, it’s a 60 points, all that kinda stuff. So you can provide that. Now you can import a Rubik, create one or use one. We’ll look at that again slightly later. Okay. So we have the students for the assignment, assignment, for the students, the points. Today’s And do topic. Now we have the title and the instructions. Now what we can do here is we can say, I can add, I don’t know, a YouTube link. I’m just going to write something down on summer planets. This is all for examples. Ok. This is just me kind of put it in something here, so we have something to show our students. But again, it’s completely depends on the type of stuff that you’ll be providing. I’m going to click this one, dinner for maybe for some inspiration, I’m going to add this and I can say that here. Please find inspiration in the attached video. Okey-dokey. I can also add a Google Doc slide sheet, drawing or form to this assignment as well. So I can create a Google doc and add it to this. So this would create a Google doc, open it on a new tab, and allow me to edit the Google Doc with maybe steps. Maybe I want a specific steps in this assignment. I want them to do a, B, C, and D, or maybe a template. Maybe I want him to make an assignment or didn’t make an essay, but more of a scientific essay where it’s broken down into template sections. And I give them to headings and they fill them in. Or maybe this document has questions and they have to fill out the questions underneath us. It’s endless. It really, really depends on what you’re teaching here. But really the, the playground is there. You can create as many different types of assignments as you’d like. I’m just gonna go back to the class. Okay, I’m gonna close that document. And on the class year, it gave us an option of saying sharing settings and how basically it’s going to be shared. We’re going to look at all of the things this as shortly. Okay. I’m just gonna keep got it. We’re going to say the students can view the file, so they can view it, but they can’t edit it. So they can view it, make a copy of the file, and then submit that later. If we say they can edit the file, that means they make, they can make changes to the template you gave and wants students might make wrong edits and mess up the template for the rest of the students because you’d only provide one. We’re just going to say the students can beautiful. Now you can also change this. So it says make a copy for each student. And what that does is, instead of giving one document to all of your students to edit together or one document. So all of your students can view the same document. This is creating a copy for every student to have for themselves. So if student a decides to start editing their document, it won’t affect student B’s documents because they’ll have their own document. And this may be useful, let’s say if you are attaching a template for students to work from where let’s say you put a question in and they fill the blanks. You don’t want them all editing the same document. So this will give a copy for each student. Okay, so that’s pretty much all there is to assignments. We have our title, our instructions are attachments. We have our classes to students. We want to give the assignment 2 and are today’s my due date disappeared because I had to pause this video because I sneezed. So I think after removing that by accident. So if you didn’t notice and our topic is disappeared, so let me pop the topic back in. It was plants look. So excuse me. I have everything back to normal now. Okay. That’s the way it was just before I I did a quick edit to this video. So here we are. That’s everything we need to do. And what we can do here is we can click assign. Now we can also save this as a draft for later discarded this whole assignment. Schedule this assignment. So we can say, okay, I want this assignment to go live and 09:00 AM tomorrow morning, so students won’t see it until then. And we can click assign. So what I’ll do is I’m just going to take a sine. So that’s assigning. And it just takes a moment or so. And there we are. We have a topic called plants and an assignment called your favorite plant. And that’s pretty much it. If you were to create more assignments under the topic plants, they would show as a list here. Or if you were to create another assignment, would a new topic, you would see a new topic here also. Ok. So you can edit these and you can edit your assignment and move up and down. And when you have many assignments and many topics here, you’ll actually be able to drag and drop them around by moving them around. You know. Now we can’t at the moment because we only have one. But you would be able to. And I’ll quickly jump back to the stream where here you can see that our new assignment has been posted. So it would notify students also here as well. Okay, now you’re students will get a notification that you’ve created a new assignment also. So they’ll know that an assignment was created and they’ll go check their emails and they will be brought to here. So it’s kind of highlighted in many different areas, you know, Okey-dokey. So that’s everything we need to know about creating an assignment. In our next video, we’re gonna look at a quiz assignment, and it’s something kinda similar but just different. And I look forward to seeing you then.
10. Lecture 9 – Quiz Assignments: Hey there and welcome back. So on this class, we’re going to have a look at creating a quiz assignment. So I’m just on the homepage or the stream of our class here, or biology class. And I’m going to click on classwork up here. Okay? So next I’m going to click on Create. And when clicking on that, we need to select the quiz assignment. Okay, so very similar to our normal assignment, we need to give it a title. So I’m going to call this I don’t want just a test quiz. Just why not? You know, instructions, answer all questions of police. Ok, cool. So just like our regular assignment, it has a title and instruction we can add denote Google Drive link or attachment, I should say a link here to a site, a fired or maybe a YouTube video for more information. And also we can create a Google doc or slide or sheet, etc. Now, the quiz assignment comes with a quiz attached, a Google form. Now, when we say quizzes, the quizzes don’t actually take place on Google classroom. What happens is it creates a Google form and attaches it to the specific assignment. So that way it’s all linked together. On the right-hand side here, you’ll see we have, it’s for biology students. All the students in this class include your test student. The points we have, let’s say, we’re gonna say that this is 10 quiz. Okay, let’s just go, let’s just say, I don’t know, two points. It’s a really, really, really small Quiz. No due days. That’s okay for now. And no topic on the neatest suit, that’s fine. Okay, so I’m just going to quickly jump into creating a very short quiz by clicking here on the blanket quiz. That will create a new tab for us. And this is what Google Forms interface looks like. Okay? So what we can do here is create AR Quiz does a lot you can do on Google Forms, By the way. Just to let you know, I’ll be very briefly looking at very simple multiple choice questions and such here. And if you want to jump into Google forums, I’m sure there’s some great courses out there. First, I may be creating a course quite soon regarding Google forms, the ins and outs. So maybe you can have a look there and my challenge to see if it’s there yet, even though it might not be, it means I’m still creating if it’s not there. But there’s plenty of green information on forms online. Anyway, that’s jumping. So we need to give our quiz a name. And we’re going to call this the tricky quiz. Because why not write formed description, please? And so all the questions below. Okay, so that’s just the title and the description of our quiz. Google forms gives us a question, an example question that we can work with. So you’ll see it in this kind of grid form. This is the question that we’re working with. Let’s come up with a question. Okay. What color is snow? I’m just making this up now. Okay. So bear with me. Okay, so that’s our question. We are choosing a multiple choice question. As you can see, just lots of different types of questions here. But this one by default is a multiple choice. Our first option, Let’s say white. Okay? You can hover here to add an option. Again. Let’s say is snow Brown. I guess it can be sometimes if it’s 30, is a purple. Maybe with some food dye or such, and maybe read, okay, cool. So we have our question and our answer is, I’m just going to quickly say white. So by ticking on the apologies, when I click on the answer key button here, it means the, basically we’re assigning points to it. So we want to give the question and answer by selecting one of these. Now I’m after assigning white as the correct answer, and I’m going to give this 1 value. So basically this question is worth 1. Okay? So I’m gonna click Done. That’s done as far as I’m concerned, okay, and it’s required. So actually, let’s click required to do so they need to answer this question, otherwise they can’t submit the form. Let’s hover here on the right hand side. As you can see, there’s some options we have. We can add another question here. Okay? And we get another grid shape. Let’s go and try the short answer question, okay? Or maybe the paragraph, okay? So it gives us along a long text answer, which basically means maybe this is something for a small essay or a couple of paragraphs, you know. Tell me about your family. Okay, cool. We can set the points for this. I’m going to set this to 1. And I guess really we can’t mark this. Now. We can add fat answer feedback. But this is the kind of question that you might need to mark later. So I’m just gonna click this done and it required. Okay, cool. So I’m just going to stick with this a two question 2 quiz. I’m gonna hover up to the top right hand side here. You can do things like customize the colors, the themes. We’re going to go with a green. Because, you know, Irish green. Maybe. I’m gonna close that. You can go to settings. And in settings we have an option that says collect email addresses. I’m gonna click that. Okay, and limited one response. So the user, or let’s say the student who’s doing the quiz will need to log in with their Google account. They’re the same account that they use to access classroom. And it only be allowed to answer the quiz once, which means they can’t retake the quiz. And this will allow us to collect email addresses, also. Okey-dokey. So we have some other options here, like showing the progress bar for the student. Confirmation by default says your response has been recorded. You can say tanks for taking the quiz. And you have some more options here as well. Okay, so what you can do is you can immediately released a grade to the student after each submission, or we can turn on later. So we have to review it first before we give them. I’m just going to leave it here for now. Okay? Right. Make this acquis assigned points perfect. I’m just going to click Save. So there’s lots of things you can play with here. I’m just briefly running over this. Okay. Here is the email address they need to enter because we made that required in the settings are first question, our second question. If you click on here, you can see responses. Notice no responses as of yet. And I’m just going to finish off, finish off this form section by hovering over the i here, which is the Preview button. What that will do is it will open a new tab and show us the quiz. Ok. So if I just go gmail.com, what color is no, I’m gonna say it’s white. And tell me about your family. I’m going to say they’re nice. Maybe we expect more from the student, but just for now we’ll do this. Okay? And I’m going to click Submit view score so I can view the score. I got white, correct. And tell me about your family. It says it’s wrong, but that’s because it’s not graded. Okay? So this will need to be graded later by the teacher. So this is just the student view, okay? By taking the quiz. And what we can do here is we see responses one. So notice how we can go into specific, that’s a data. Lets say we can see right, what was the hardest question that an individual had? What was the responses? I’ve got briefly just an overview. Who got what was the percentage and for example, the scores. I can see, right? This is the email address and this is the score to have out of two. Let’s say your quiz was all multiple choice questions. That way you could just have to score generated automatically, you know, and you can see when they took the quiz as well. And just, one final thing is you can click on the Create spreadsheet here. So what this does is it can create a new spreadsheet. And it will put all of our answers together in a spreadsheet format like this. So we have the timestamp, the email address to score, and the answers to the questions. And you can do whatever you’d like then in this Google Sheet. Okay. Excellent, brilliant. So just giving you a quick dive in to see how this works. We can send it as well just by clicking send up here. And that will allow us to send it to students, let’s say denote, invited him, just notify them. That’s fine too. We have lots and lots of options here. Okay. I’m just gonna hit refresh. And as you can see, everything stays where it is. And I’m going to close this. Now that’s our quiz. Ok, I know it says blend quizzes at the moment, but lets click assign up at the top right-hand side of the screen. Cole. So as you can see in classwork, we had test quiz and we still have our old plants one. Let’s go back to our stream. You can see we have Kevin O’Brien posted a new assignment or test quiz. If I click on this, I have to view from the teacher site. So excellent and you can see the quiz linked to it also. So perfect. That’s a quick overview on the quizzes assignments. There’s lots that you can do it as my best advice would be to create a quiz assignment. Have the points in the form match what your total points was in the assignment. As you can see at the start I said two for both of them. So that way they’ll match and make things easier later. And play with Google Forms. Just jump in and play with this, okay, just go crazy. You can’t get around, just keep making mistakes. And after a while you’d really, really get in there. There’s also a great help center if you go to, let’s have a look here. Google classroom assignments. So you’ll see here, create an assignment on the computer classroom help. There’s lots here. You can really, really help put as well. Okay? So this stuff gives you some graphs that you can work with to follow with them. If you have a question, sometimes you can jump in here and haven’t read through this as well. It’s very helpful. Anyway, without going off on a too much of a tangent. I’ll wrap this video up. On our next video, we’re going to quickly look at Just a question on the, the next type of assignment. 11. Lecture 10 – Question & Material & Reuse: Hello there. So welcome back. On this video, what we’re gonna do is just going to finish off a few things in the classwork section. Okay, so let’s hover above to the top of our stream. Unclick classwork. While we’re there, we’re going to hover over create. And just on this video we’re going to check out the question option, the material option, and the reuse post option. Okay, so just very quickly, let’s click on the question option. Now these are a bit more straightforward than the assignments we were looking at previously in the last two videos. And this question is literally just a question your posts into to your class. And you’re not adding any sort of quiz or big love assignment or anything. So this question could be, you know, I don’t know, something like write an essay on the moon. Okay? And you can write some instructions in here. You can again add some files. Are each a video or a file on a Google Drive suddenly link something in. And you can also create an attached document. So let’s say you had some special rules for this assignment. You can have them on a Google Doc already and attached that Google Doc to this. You know, now I’m just gonna close this because I clicked on that. So that’s just ignore this for a moment and I’m going to remove this, okay? So you have the option to have a question, or as you can see up here, you can put a multiple choice and also if you’d like, but we’re just going to stick to a question. And what this is saying here is it’s requiring a student to, to give us a short answer. So you can put something in here, work away, you know it, whichever way you want to work with it. It’s for our biology class, all students, we have our point system here. No due days actually, let’s just selected two days, but say, as you can see, my dates or after jumping in the future, September seventh, 2020. And we’re going to, yeah, for just before midnight topic, we can create another topic called the moon. I don’t think the moon is on their biology, but let’s go with it anyway. Okay, so we have the moon. Students can reply to each other. That’s kinda cool. And students can edit their answer, okay, so we can put in some things here. This is very versatile. Now I’m putting in like an essay. You could also say something like When would suit you for a field trip or where. Okay. And you can do things here where you add them in. And I can just change the topic to field trip tickets, all one word. I think maybe not obviously not know. Let’s put this in here. Okay, I’m going to click Ask. And that posed the question to the class. So it just takes a second and it should arrive on our stream. Kevin O’Brien posted a new question. Where would suit you for a field trip? Okay. Excellent. And as you can see here, when we go to our classwork, it created a topic here, field trip. And it put it underneath this, this, this, this, this topic, plants. We had our topic here. We didn’t design a topic for our test quiz, but we’re looking at topics very shortly in a short video soon, okay, so don’t worry about that for now. Now. That’s the question. Let’s have a look at the next one, which is material. So the material is very, very straightforward. Let’s say you have a PDF. It’s a ten page PDF with all of the learning material you need to provide to the students for the next couple of months. What you can say here is learning material on bacteria attached. Now what you could do here is click Add, file and upload a PDF with all of your details on us like a, like an e-book or something. You can also say, All right, you know, here’s some learning material on bacteria and you find a great YouTube video that gives a lot of information on that. You know, you could also add a Google Drive file. So let’s say you created your own Google Doc and you have it set to view only. You could link it here as well. So you can link it here. Lots of cool things you can do. And you can also create a doc as well. All this does is just provide the material. It’s just a kind of reference material. So if I was to go to topic, as you can see, like I didn’t know there was no scoring. If I go to topic and click Create topic, I could put in bacteria y nought, or I put it on their learning material. Okay, and I’ll create a new topic for us and it’s click post. So new topic here, title learning material. And we’ve got some learning material and bacteria and insight this I would’ve attached some darker PDF or et cetera, you know. Okay. Oh, there’s a pop back out of that. So finally, let’s go to Create and go to reuse posts. Now what you can do here is you can look at all of the posts you would have made over time and you can reuse it. So let’s say your favorite plant, you know, I want to reuse this. This was very useful before. I’m going to use it again and maybe change it up a bit. I can create new copies of all attachments. I’m just gonna ignore that. Maybe I have new attachments and I highlighted and I click reuse. And what this does is it will create a new assignment for us, but it will reuse the material I’ve put in the old one before. So this one, I can say your new favorite plant went out. Again. I’m just kinda going through a, an example of this very versatile. You can use it for whatever way suits you. So let’s create this. Okay, I’m gonna go to assign to the top right. I’m going to keep everything else the same. And we should find a new assignment called your new favorite plant, which is under here. Plants, your new favorite plant. And the old favorite plant. Sounds pretty cool. Isn’t that? Okay, cool, cool Ebola, right? So that’s it for this video. 12. Lecture 11 – Organisation using Topics: Hey there and welcome back. So on this video we’re going to quickly have a look at some topics. Okay, what are topics in Google Classroom? So I guess the Help Center gives us the best description of what a topic is. Think of topics as modules or units and the assignments or materials as individual lessons. You can reorder the post so their topic and rearrange topics to follow your curriculum. Okay, so saying that, let’s jump into our classwork section and have a look at our assignments and material. As you can see, we’ve got test quiz. Here. We’ve kept this one up. Learning materials are bacteria. Where would you suit you on a field trip? Your favorite plants? They are all assignments, materials or questions, okay. What are topics are, you know, are kind of the, the organization of those, you know. So on their learning material, we put all of our learning material or questions maybe or old, old material that we could use. Field trip, we put our future questions or plants, we put our plants topic, or plants that say assignments regarding plants. Now considering this as a biology class, we can always create new topics, you know? So let’s just say, I think we can create a topic by clicking on Create in here, there we go, here he is. So click on Create and go to topic. And I know that we have a test quiz here. So we can call this just the quizzes, maybe something like that. Okay, cool. So as you can see, we’ve created the topic called Quizzes. And there is no assignments or quizzes underneath that. So what we can do on this screen is very handily hover over our test quiz. Click on it, and we can drag it under different types of topics. Okay? So what we’ll do is we’ll drag it under quizzes. And you can see this grey space appears. And we’re going to just drop it in there. Ok. So now we have quizzes and as the topic and we have some material underneath. This is very, very useful. It’s very useful for yourself. It’s very useful for students to find related material that you’re doing. I mean, for biology, you could have one section called DNA, which let’s say a topic called DNA. And under that you’d have quizzes, learning materials, assignments, everything related to the DNA aspect of biology. Another topic you could create would be bacteria. And maybe underneath that you have all of the materials for carrying bacteria. And so on. Didn’t know if you’re doing maths, you could have calculus under one topic. You could have, you know, every sort of other area of maths. I wish I knew more about maths to give you some examples. But I think you know what I mean. So, okay, that looks like we’ve covered topics. Again, topics can be dragged around, assignments can be dragged around. The actual topics themselves can be dragged around you. So I can bring plants to the top and make it more important. And maybe put quizzes to the button, that kind of thing. And it updates then. Okay, cool. So that’s all we need to look at for topics. Topics will also become available when you create a new assignment, you can assign it a topic to your assignment. I think we’ve seen that already a few times. And that way it will automatically be organized under the topic. Just to show you there very quickly. For example, let’s go to quizzes. I click on his test quiz. I think I can open the query. I can open this material can’t die. Here. We can click edit. And on the right-hand side, as you can see, I have topic. And we can put it under the topic quizzes like a change to the other ones too. I can also have no topic. Now, you can only have one topic per assignment, okay? You can’t have the same assignment under multiple topics. Just to let you know that, I’m going to click Save again. And it brings us back. Excellent. So that’s everything really you need to know about topics for now. There’s just a very handy way of organizing your Google Classroom Assignments. 13. Lecture 12 – Drive Folder & Calendar: Hey there and welcome back. So on this video we’re going to look at the class dry folder and also the Google Calendar related to this class. Okay, so just to dive right in and let’s have a go, let’s have a look. I’m tripping over my words. So what we’ll do is hover over to the classwork area again, okay? And what you will see on the top of the screen, very handily here, Google calendar and the class dry folder. So first of all, let’s click on class Drive folder. Now does exactly what it says on the tin. Ok. So what it does here is it brings us to a folder for our Google class. And it gives us all of the documents that were attached to assignments, quizzes, et cetera. You know, basically this folder is automatically created for the class. So when you go to Google Drive, you’ll see Classroom. A folder will be created for your classroom. And inside that classroom folder, you will see biology. So that’s for your class. And let’s say you were part of ten classes on Google classroom. They would all be associated with your classroom folder. So that would be here. And then you’d have to click into your class to find all of the details. So this is where you would find, you know, your quizzes that we made and there’s a lot of quizzes and stuff here, blank ones. I’ve created some test documents so that you might have to do some cleaning up here as well. And sometimes denoted There’s attachments from for under your favorite plant quiz, the new favourite planets when we created, as you can see, there’s some information here. So all of the documents, basically for posted by the teacher to the classroom goes into this folder. Now, there is a way for you as a teacher to find your students submissions here. Okay, so let’s say when you create your quiz or you’re Dino assignment or a quiz assignment or which whatever. For example, let’s have a look at our new favorite plants. Are our favorite plant. The original one. This is the document that was associated with the test student. So remember when we public here, remember when we created the assignment, your favorite planet. And what we did was we created a Google Doc attachment and we said, each student will get a copy. It says it right here. So each student will have a Google Doc that they have to put their answers into. For us. What happens on Google Drive is in the biology folder. We go to the favorite plant folder again, it’s another folder. And what this does is it puts all of your student docks in here. So this is a great place for you as a teacher to come along and find the name of the student and click into the document that they edited and they worked on. So when the student, for example, submits the assignment for this assignment, when they, when they submit their documents for your favorite plant and they write about their favorite plant. On that Google Doc. It will go here and you will be able to see each student’s assignment here. They won’t be able to see each others. But you as a teacher would have automatic sharing rights for each individual students dock. Okay. I hope that makes sense. Ok. If you do have any questions about that, please feel free to drop a question into the discussion board below while doing this course. Okay, so what that essentially is how the Drive folder works. Now I’m just going to close this tab here just to tidy this up, but I’m going to hit X on the top left here to close this assignment. So let’s have a look at Google calendar. So what this calendar here does is it shows any deadlines or anything like that regarding and the assignments we’ve created. Okay. So we’re on the week here. Let me just go to the month on the top right, we can click moment and we can go dismissed. That’s fine. So this is today’s the 23rd of September 20-20. And sorry, I think I just hit my microphone there, so please ignore that noise. It’s what we see here on the seventh is the deadline that we created for the question. Remember when we created the question, where would suit you for a field trip? And we set the deadline for a minute to midnight on September seventh, us back in time. So that doesn’t make much sense. But if we created a deadline in the future, it would show up on this calendar here. And every student that is in this classroom will get a notification of these events. Okay, So they will go to their Google Calendar and they will see the deadline appearing. So it’s very useful for you as a teacher and also for a student to, okay, so basically that’s everything we need to know about using Google Calendar and Google Dr. Whitt classroom. Again, I would suggest create some classes, creates some assignments, deadlines everywhere. And do you know, add some attachments and just play with this, okay, and see what suits you best for your class, because it really depends on what you’re teaching also. Okay, so that’s everything we need to know for now. Our next section in the course, we’ll be looking at the students view. So what does the student to see when they access Google classroom? We’re just going to focus on that for a couple of videos. And that way you’ll get some insight into what the student sees and what they get to do, and how you’ll be able to react to that from your teacher site. Okey-dokey. So brilliant. 14. Lecture 13 – Viewing as a Student: Hey there and welcome back. So in this video, what we’re gonna do is see what Google classroom looks like as a student. So earlier we signed into both the teacher and the student account. So I can switch over by going to the top and right inside here, and hovering on the key icon. And I have the student account right here as a quick access. Now, I’m already signed in. So I can go to classroom and see what it looks like as a student at this way. But if you’re using a computer and you didn’t sign in yet, all the student needs to do, go to classroom dot google.com and sign in using their student email address. Okay, so I’m just going to skip that step and just do that by clicking right here. Now it’s going to open a new tab for me, classroom dot google.com. I’m now signed in with the t appear on the top right for test student. And what happens now is it shows me all of the classes I’m enrolled in. Now. I’m just enrolled in the biology class here. Okay. If i was part of, you know, ten or 20 different classes, they would all show up here in a list view. And I would get to click on each one of them and find out what needs to be done. As a student. You have a to-do list here, which is great. You have some some, some assignments that were, let’s say, assigned to me as a student. I remember we created these earlier. What you can also see is the calendar, and that will open Google Calendar just to show you what kind of classes or what kind of deadlines you have for this week, next week or whenever. Ok. So what I’ll do is I’m just going to click back, back and go back here again. What you can see here is you can click Open your work for biology and I can open my biology folder in my Google Drive account. So as a student, you also get a Google Drive folder for your class. So notice how this looks quite different to the one we saw as a teacher. When you’re a student and you’re signed up for a class in Google Classroom. And a teacher shares some docs which you, you’re only given access to the docs that are shared which you, okay. Nothing else. So this is our detail redox deal. The names of course are quite blended the moments, but we didn’t rename anything correctly in Google Classroom earlier. So these will have more specific names. If we named them as a teacher had been more accurately, let’s say. Okay, so let’s click on biology and we’re gonna open up the stream as a student. Okay, so basically that’s how we access the class. This is the stream, as you can see, it’s very, very similar to what the teacher can see. We have our class work area. This just gives us a little thing here saying look, there’s filters and topics. This is a useful here. Do you know? It’s the same thing as the teacher sees, except we have a different view. So we can click on them and you can see you have a green mark for assigned. So that means you’ve been assigned to this. Let’s look at the learning material in bacteria and eukaryotes kind of grayed out. It just kinda means that Look, this isn’t exactly an active. You know, assignment you need to work on. It’s just something that’s already kind of done. And these are all things that I can contribute wet. Okay. It says missing if I haven’t contributed to it, yes. It says assigned If it’s something I’m supposed to submit for correction. And basically there’s the form we created earlier as well. Another shortcut to, to Calendar and dry folder for this biology class too. So that’s how we view our assignments. Let’s say I want to go to my favorite plant. Okay, I can click view assignment. So look at this. It has a slightly different layout. I’m just going to click X here because I explained that anyway. This is how a student views and assignment. The teacher can viewed in a slightly different way because the editor assignments for students. But as a student here, you’re given your title. How many points? That’s what the due dates, which is well past this date by now. And it says write an essay about your favorite plant and please find inspiration in attached video. And now I can click on the video and view what I need to view here. And as you can see in the top right, we have your work. And remember the student, the teacher created a document for each student’s taken part in this. This is the document that I’ve been given. When I click on it, it opens up here. So this is the document I submit my work on. Let’s just go back to the class for a second or the assignment. And I can even add more if I wanted to. As a student, I could add a file or link. Okay. I can add a private comments for myself. You know, remember to do this today. And I can add a comment so other students can see this like anyone. Find other helpful videos. And that way the class will see this or whoever has been assigned this assignment. Kool and the teacher will be able to see this also. So let’s say I have filled in some details on my test student doc. Okay, it’s saving. Got it. I’m going to close this and I’m going to click turn in. Do you want to turn in your work? Yes, I’m going to turn it in. So now I’ve submitted my work for correction. I can onsubmit us. It’s been turned in late or no one, so I can still turn it in. But a we’ll come up saying I’ve turned it in late. I could onsubmit onsubmit to add or change attachments. Don’t forget to resubmit once you’re done. So denoted say if you wanted to resubmit after the deadline, you will be turned to turning it in late. But if you submitted it in time and you wanted to resubmit it in time, that’s usefully be okay. Cool. So that’s one job done. So that’s basically how students would, you know, turn in an assignment on Google Classroom. Okay, so going back, just going to click on biology here. We have our stream again. We have our classwork. And as you can see, you can close that there is a comment on us. And we can even click on the class comment, which is one, I’m left. So students can see this two. And we can basically do directs dinner. We can fill it in as we go if we wanted to. Cool, that’s pretty much everything you need to know as a student go into this. It’s a great way to access your assignments and submit your work when you have a completed. And Okey-dokey just forgot to mention that you can have a look at your grade from the classes page. So let’s go and click on biology here, and let’s click the hamburger icon here to main menu. Now I can click on classes. And what I can do here is hover over our work for biology. When I click on this, it’ll give me my name and it will give me the work I need to do or I have done. Now, if I had a, you know, percentage given to me or let’s say I had a score returned on this. It would also show me my percentage as a student. Okay. Now I can filter them. Mrs. signed returned, missing, and all. But this is a very handy way, although a student to view what needs to be done or what hasn’t, has or hasn’t been done in a specific class. So it’s really handy for them to view their homework. Two, excellent. So that’s pretty much everything we need to know as a student viewing Google classroom. What I’ll do next is we’re going to have a look at, you know, making classroom a bit easier. Dinner when it comes to grading work. And some other bits and bobs that we can use as a teacher. But this is just a quick insight to see what Google classroom looks like as a student. Cool. 15. Lecture 14 – Grading Student Work: Hey, and welcome back. So in this video, we’re going to look into grading student work on Google Classroom. So I’m on the stream area of my biology class and I’m now logged in as a teacher again. Okay. So I’m not logged in as a student. I am viewing this as a teacher. Now, as far as I know, one of the students has submitted work, ok, and as we saw in our last video. So I’m going to click on classwork here. And the, your favorite plant assignment, there was work submitted, wasn’t there. So what I can do is I can click view assignment. And as I see here from the teacher’s view, I can see the total number of assignments that have been submitted. And I see there’s one here for the only student in the class, which is test student. Now, we see turned in late was here. So let’s say that’s just for yourself. You know, you could give discretionary deductions for that or you could keep it, you know, you could just maybe reject us. Just say, look, it’s going 0. That’s just a note for yourself. What we can also do here is we can see who, how many turned it in and how many are still has assigned. So no one is assigned to this anymore and one has been turned in. So we can see that basically everyone, once this is 0 means everything’s been turned in. Okay, time to mark this student’s work. So what we can do here is click on this to view the document. So as that loads up, you can see the work that I submitted here. Very, very clever work indeed, isn’t it? Now, let’s just pretend that there’s an essay here, you know, like that’s it as paragraphs of work and we want to mark through us, Let’s say that we come up with a score of 60%. So you have your American scheme, you know what you’re looking for, and the student got 60 out of a 100, they turned it in late. Maybe they lose ten or 20 points for that. And out of that, maybe they lose another ten or 20 points because the work just, there wasn’t a lot of detail. So we get 60%. Look over to the right-hand side of our screen here. We can see the file that we’re viewing. And the great. Now it says out of a 100, what are we going to give us? Now remember when we created the assignment at the beginning, we set the total score to a 100. So here is where we mark the score out of a 100. So I’m just gonna say 60 here. Now one quick note I forgot to mention in the last video was private comments just aren’t for students to leave for themselves. It’s a private comments between the student and the teacher. So let’s say the student had a very good reason for leaving or for submitting the workplace. And you know, they had a very good reason they wanted to explain it to. They could do that by leaving a private comment. So the teacher can see that private comments. So this private comments are only between the teacher and the students. And what I could do is reply to the private comments so that they can see michelman To, Now, this was kinda of a note for the student, but I can just say Very good. And when you have that done, you can click post. That way the student will see your response. Now I have 60. I had the private commons taking care of the, you know, like when you’re using Google Docs, There’s lots of cool things you could do. You could suggest things I could say, Do you know, remove this and say, write something else. And then click here. And the student can see this. They can see the suggestion for saying delete this and maybe write something else and then they can reply. So that’s something if you want to give them some feedback. Now the Hangu thing here is, as a teacher, you don’t have to keep going back and forth between all the student’s work. You can actually click between your students. So if you had a 100 suits your class, they would all show up as a list here. And you can click on the next one and the next one in the next one, the next one. And it will just reload the page with their work, which is very handy for that, you know, and you can sort them by status, firstName, lastName. Now, this student has suggested or a suggestion, I should say, and they have their mark. So I’m going to return this to the student. Now on the top right hand side of the screen, you just need to click return. There’s also some other options here. You can return this submission or multiple submissions, but we’re just going to say return this submission, which you can do so by clicking right here. Students would be notified and contract any grade you’ve left. So are you shorted? This is a great yes, I am. Indeed. I’m clicking return. So when it is returned, we have our great outbox here. It means done. We can maybe continued to these suggestions, that’s fine. It says it was done late, but we’re done and dusted. So I’m gonna close this window here. I’m gonna go back to our classroom and I’m just going to refresh the page. And there we go. So now we have 0 left on assigned 0 left on turned in, and the status of this one is graded. So this student is greatest. So they’ve got 60 out of a 100 here. And if you had 50-60 students who were how many ever you have, it would they would all show up here as well. Okay. So that’s how we would grade a student’s work. Now whether it’s a quiz assignment along answer for regular assignment, all that kinda stuff. It’s the same method that applies. Okay? You can come in here and created this way. Now, if you are a teacher and you were on the Classes page, so I’m just going to click on this Berg hamburger icon here and go to classes. You can also see this here, open gradebook for biology. And this brings us to the Grades section. So what we can see here is all of the assignments we’ve made and the totally upgrades that each student works out at. So I’ve only corrected one sulfur and they’ve gotten 60 out of a 100. Now I can actually update this if I need to from here. But then on the test quiz, denoted that, say they got to order two. So I’m going to mark it here. Maybe now you can fill this score here or you can fill it in the actual assignment by clicking on the assignment two. Okay. Where would they go on a field trip? Denote I added a score to that. I didn’t really need to add a score to that, but I did. So I’m just gonna say it again, a 100100 for that because that’s fair. And your new favorite one, let’s say they improved and they go to a 100100 there. Now I’m adding scores on the grades page, but you can add these scores individually, also on the assignments themselves, which is probably what you will do in reality. But you can update, updating here too. So very useful. I’m just going to read all that page there. And as you can see, the scores are still there and you see a class average as well. So if you had lots of students here on this list, you can see that the class average for this is 60. But if someone had 506050, maybe the average would be 55. So that’s just a quick overview on grades. You can sort your students by their first and last name, and you can see them by assignments as well. Ok, very cool. So that’s just a nice overview of grading your students work and returning the work to, to students as well. Now, I just wanted to give one quick note there. I’m going to pop into my email address for my teacher. And every time a student submits work, the teacher gets a notification of that students submitting the work. So as you can see here, it even says to teach a student added a private comment to the assignment. So you do get notifications, which is very, very useful. Okay? So if there had a question, a private comment question about the assignment, you’ll get notified. Maybe you can reply back to them and clarify something before they submit to work. And also you get the same on the, you know, when they comment on something or when they submit something. So next, we’re going to look at a making classroom a little bit easier for you. 16. Lecture 15 – Rubics: Hey there and welcome back. So in this video we’re going to have a look at what we call a rubric in Google Classroom. So as a teacher, this will help you a lot. To grade. Your students, work much faster, much quicker, much, much more handy. I guess. Basically it’s American scheme. It’s a scheme that’s used to grade your students at different levels. You know, from excellent, brilliant, too, good, too okay to fail. And that has some predetermined marks and then some descriptions and you can share it. It’s fantastic. Anyway, let’s just jump right in and have a look. Okay, so what we need to do is let’s go to the classwork tab and we’re going to create a rubric for an assignment. So let’s go to your favorite plant, okay, and let’s click edit. Now here on the right-hand side of the screen, we see rubric and we see the option to add a rubric. So we’re going to create rubric. And it will open up, let’s say the Rubik for us and it’s going to have some criteria. Okay? So basically just as an example, I’m going to create one of these just to see how it works are assignments was out of a 100 points. So what I’m gonna say is for our criteria, we’re going to say total score. Now this could be like, you know, let’s say full essay quality. This could be introduction. You can make a new criteria afterwards for body, you can do lots of things like this. Okay? But I’m just gonna say the quality of the essay. Now. We can add different scoring options for us here, which is very handy. So let’s say if you did a great job, you’re going to get full marks out of a 100. Okay? So level title would be excellent. This is a great essay. What? Okay. Now we can create a new one by hovering over the add level. And then we can say, Right, let’s say 70. You could say, very good. This is great. But may improve. Let’s add one more and say 20. Denote, let’s just say fail needs more work. Okay? So, right, so what will do here? So we just need to click save. And then it has added that Rubik to our, our, our assignment. So when we click Save again, that’s going to stick to this assignment. Now what we can do here, so let’s say we can click back into view in the assignment again. And on this side we can see the graded results. Now remember when we graded the students work. Let’s go back in again. And what you can see here on the right-hand side is a, we have the options for some rubrics scores. So we did it manually here, which is fine. But you can also go to the Rubik options and you can just go, alright, this was Excellent. I’m going to give it a 100. Or this is very good. It’s gonna give me 70. Or didn’t want this just wasn’t that great. I’m gonna give it 20. So they’re pre-determined scores. And I mean, if you have 200 students to correct, I’m sure put in maybe 30 minutes or an hour into creating this scoring scheme would save you a lot of time and effort later, and I guess a lot more transparency as well. Now I’m going to give this student, I’m going to update the score to excellent, okay, I’m gonna click return. The students would be notified that the grade has been changed. That’s fine. And that’s how we would create and use a Rubik. Now, there’s lots of different ones. Instead of saying the full essay, I could say, Right, let’s go or the introduction of the essay. And then I’d have another option here for the body and another option for the closing. So I could score the introduction 20 points, ten points, 05 points, then the body could be 50302010 or whatever. And they’ll add up to a 100. Great. So you just gotta make sure your numeric numbers add up. Or what they’ll do generally is that average out two out of a 100 for us, okay? So that’s how you use a Rubik. There’s some very useful information on the Google Classroom Help Center For more information on Rubik. So if I go Google Classroom Rubik, you’d get some great examples here. When you go to the create or reuse a rubric for an assignment. This is a great article here, has lots of cool information. Rubik’s and you can reuse rubrics as well for other assignments to brilliant. So that’s everything you need to know about Rubik’s to make your life much, much easier as a teacher, grading your student’s work. 17. Lecture 16 – Google Meet in Classroom: Hey there and welcome back. So on this video, I just wanted to give you a quick heads up regarding Google meat on Google Classroom. So Google meat is Google’s video conferencing product. It allows meetings for up to a 100 people to take place on Google for Education accounts. Now unfortunately, I’m testing on a non Google for Education account. So there are a couple of features that unfortunately I don’t have access to because you must be a UN official educational institution to be granted access to the type of account. But I just wanted to give you a quick, quick, quick rundown of video meetings in Google Classroom. Okay, so just looking at this tab here, there’s a very handy article called start and video meeting for education. And as a teacher, you can find that in the classroom help. So if the URL is here, also, if you’d like to have a look. So what this does here is it gives you a rundown of some of the requirements, the permissions for joining. Essentially, what you can do is you can turn on Google meat for your school. And as a teacher, you go to the classroom that are the class you’ve created on calcium google.com. So just like basically the one we’ve biology class we’ve created, you hover over to the gear icon in settings. And you will see a, an area that has Google meat that says Generate the meat link. Now, you’ll see on this one that I have here, if I go to the gear icon on the top right, unfortunately, it’s not inside my class settings. I don’t have anything regarding Google meat, but you do have it in the the Google for Education accounts. Now when you click degenerate meet link, it says here that students who are in the same domain as the primary teacher, which means you’re all part of the same school email addresses. You can see the meat link in the stream and classwork pages. Okay, so that’s really useful. And what they do basically is they can follow and copy a link and they just basically join a video called. Now, as a teacher, you can basically start to video meeting, okay, in classroom, it will come up in the top of your stream and you click to join us. And when students want to join it, they have to sign in with your Google account. So it’s definitely worth something, something more testing out. This is kind of just a bonus video more than anything else. Some classes, some people wouldn’t be using this, but I understand everything that’s going on in 2020. More and more people are looking into this as a viable solution for a video classes. You know, maybe if you’re not participating in school or anything, or you’re doing this privately outside of a school environment. But unfortunately for this, you will need to apply for the Google for Education account if you’re a teacher and you’re not sure what that is, contact your school admin, your school tech admin. They should be able to have a look at that and see what options are available. Okay. I just wanted to give you a quick heads up on this anyway, that it is possible with certain accounts. Just unfortunately, I can’t show it on mine because I am not a high school or elementary school or primary school or secondary school or any one of those colleges are schools. I’m just working off of my own Gmail accounts. Cool. So that’s everything really that we need to know for Google Classroom. A quick rundown from a to Z. And you might just see one more video from me as a conclusion to this course. So thank you very much for taking part. I hope you found it quite useful.
