Delicious Jackfruit and CBD Tincture Recipes

Jackfruit is quickly becoming a trending meat replacement option. If meat isn’t available, try looking for jackfruit at your local grocery store. It is able to absorb flavor, so it can easily be disguised for pulled pork, chicken or beef. It’s also great in tacos. These delicious jackfruit and CBD tincture recipes will leave you mystified that a fruit can replace meat and not leave you feeling unsatisfied.

What is Jackfruit?

Jackfruit has a prickly exterior. It’s a very large fruit that is easily enough flesh for an entire family. It almost looks like a football in shape, except it’s green. It can easily be confused with a durian fruit – which would be an unpleasant surprise. Durian fruit has an almost rancid aroma to it.

Jackfruit can grow as heavy as 80 pounds.

Fun fact: Jackfruit is the national fruit of Bangladesh.

This fruit also contains natural latex. Those with a latex allergy should wear gloves when preparing it.

The best place to find jackfruit is an Asian grocery store or food market. Some specialty markets may also have them.

Preparing Jackfruit for Use

Jackfruit doesn’t take long to actually prep since you just slice the fruit in half and then into chunks. Leave the skin and seed pods intact. The seed pods are edible after being cooked.

When cooked, jackfruit has the texture of pulled meats. It also makes an ideal option for desserts as it’s fun to candy and add to ice cream. It also freezes well. The fruit is very large, so it does make a lot of food.

Once the fruit is cleaned, cut it into chunks and boil it for 45 minutes or until it’s tender. If you have a pressure cooker, you can cut the cooking time down considerably. It only takes 10 – 15 minutes in a pressure cooker.

Do not eat the skin. After cooking the fruit, separate the flesh from the skin and seed pods. Discard the skin. Then separate out the seed pods. You can either choose to incorporate them into your dish or toss them.

Pulled BBQ Jackfruit with CBD BBQ Sauce

This recipe is so easy to make. It’s delicious and really won’t have you missing meat at all. You can alter your sauce to be sweet, tangy, spicy or a combination of any of the three. We suggest using either our Alchemy Tincture or our Organic Olive Oil Tincture for this recipe.

3 cups prepared jackfruit shredded

1 cup tomato puree

¼ cup packed dark brown sugar (or brown sugar substitute)

2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar

2 droppers Canna Trading Co. CBD Tincture

2 cloves of garlic grated or finely minced

3 tablespoons onion finely minced

1 teaspoon onion powder

1 teaspoon garlic powder

1 teaspoon liquid smoke

½ teaspoon ground cumin

1 teaspoon red pepper flake (optional)

2 tablespoons honey (optional, but helps the CBD tincture incorporate better)

Pinch of sea salt

15 grinds of peppercorn medley

2 teaspoons extra virgin olive oil

Start by finely mincing your onion and garlic. Add these to a heavy saucepan along with the olive oil. Sautee on medium low heat until the onions are translucent. Add your brown sugar and vinegar. When the sugar is dissolved, add in your spices and liquid smoke. Simmer just 3 or 4 minutes. Add in the tomato puree. Taste and adjust the seasoning/heat level to your preference. This is where you’d add more vinegar, more spice, more salt, etc. You won’t want to add any additional sugar if you plan to use the honey. Simmer 30 minutes.

Remove from the heat and stir to cool. After 15 minutes, combine the honey and CBD tincture in a bowl. When emulsified, add it to the barbecue sauce and stir well.

Heat the jackfruit in a separate pan. When heated through and steaming, remove from the heat and fold in your barbecue sauce. Do not cook the barbecue sauce any further as increased heat could deplete the cannabinoids in your CBD tincture.

Serve the barbecue jackfruit on a toasted bun, in a lettuce wrap or even in a tortilla. It can also be used make barbecue pasta, barbecue nachos and barbecue cheese fries.

Jackfruit Sloppy Joe with CBD Slaw

Homemade sloppy joe sauce is so much better than canned. It’s easy to make, and you likely already have the ingredients on hand. The slaw can be served on top of the sandwich, on the side and also makes a great addition to your barbecue jackfruit or any other picnic food. It also goes well with a classic fish fry.

Homemade Sloppy Joe Sauce:

1 bell pepper diced

1 medium sweet onion diced

5 large cloves of garlic smashed, peeled and minced

1 – 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce

2 tablespoons brown sugar

Pinch of salt

Pepper to taste

2 teaspoons paprika

2 teaspoons dry mustard

2 teaspoons chili powder

½ teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes

1 ½ cups ketchup or tomato puree

½ teaspoon apple cider vinegar

1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil

Put your peppers and onions in a deep skillet or saucepan with the olive oil. Sautee until soft. Add the garlic, cook just 3 minutes. Add the remaining ingredients and cook 20 minutes. Taste and adjust the seasoning.

Pour the sauce over 2 cups of heated jackfruit. To help the jackfruit look more like ground meat, chop it up a little.

Serve on toasted buns, with or without shredded sharp cheddar cheese and a dollop of sour cream.

CBD Slaw:

2 cups thinly sliced cabbage

½ cup shredded carrots

½ cup shredded granny smith apple

¼ cup apple cider vinegar

¼ cup sugar

½ cup mayonnaise

2 droppers Canna Trading Co. Alchemy or Organic Olive Oil Tincture

1 teaspoon celery seed

½ teaspoon sea salt

1 – 1 ½ teaspoons freshly cracked black pepper

½ teaspoon garlic powder

½ teaspoon onion powder

For this, all you have to do is toss the vinegar and sugar in a bowl. Stir until the sugar is dissolved. Add the mayo, seasonings and CBD tincture in and stir. Taste, adjust sweet/tangy balance. Then, add the rest of the ingredients and mix.
