Coronavirus and The Immune System

What is Covid-19?

Covid-19 is a type of coronavirus. Coronaviruses are a type of disease that are commonly found in animals. Covid-19 made the jump to humans, and has since spread worldwide to almost every country, resulting a pandemic.

Symptoms of Coronavirus

The symptoms of coronavirus can vary from person to person, with around 80% of cases thought to be mild. Despite this, the viruses have claimed many lives globally, with deaths being more common with those who have underlying medical conditions.

Common symptoms of the coronavirus include:

  • Sore throat
  • Persistent dry cough
  • Fever
  • Fatigue
  • Body Aches

However, for many people, the symptoms of coronavirus have resulted in difficulty breathing, which has resulted in thousands of people requiring hospitalisation.

 Protecting the body from viruses

Whilst there is not yet a vaccine or a cure for coronavirus, like most viruses, the best way to fight a virus is through a strong immune system. The immune system helps our bodies to fight off infections and viruses as well as other foreign bodies. Without the help of our immune system, we would not be alive today.

 Immune boosting Ingredients

Diet is a huge contribution to the health of the immune system. Those who are overweight or underweight are more likely so suffer from a poor immune system, therefore may be more susceptible to catching common viruses such as a cold.

There are many ingredients that can help to support the immune system. These ingredients all play different roles.

Cinnamon is so rich in antioxidants, making it one of the most effective spices at helping to shift common illnesses such as the cold and flu. Cinnamon is a great ingredient as it not only tastes great but helps to support our immune system.

Turmeric helps to boost the immune system by increasing the immunomodulating capacity of the body. It is suggested that adding extra turmeric to the diet between periods of stress and flu may help boost the immune system.

Ginger has strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, meaning that it may be great at helping to boost the immune system.

Not only are almonds a great healthy snack option, but they’re also tasty and are a great source of vitamin E. Vitamin E acts as an antioxidant in the body, which as a result can help the immune system function. In addition to this, almonds are a great source of protein and iron which are both essential for the immune system.

Green Tea

Green teas are rich in polyphenols which are a type of antioxidant. Polyphenols protect the body from potential viruses and infections, making them efficient infection fighters.

Raw honey is known to have immune boosting properties, due to being incredibly high in phytonutrients.

Citrus fruits, including lemon, orange, and kiwi are a great source of vitamin C. Vitamin C is vital to helping keep our immune system strong, as they also have antiviral and antibacterial properties.

Along with a healthy diet, frequent exercise and limiting stress are most effective ways to reduce the risk of viruses and illnesses. It is important to maintain an overall healthy lifestyle to keep the immune system strong.

CBD and The Endocannabinoid System

The endocannabinoid system is a complex cell signalling system within the body. The endocannabinoid system is made up of cannabinoids, receptors, and enzymes. Whilst endocannabinoids are made within the body (endogenous cannabinoids), The ECS can also be stimulated with plant-based cannabinoids, which as a result can help bring balance to the body.

Due to the anti-inflammatory benefits of CBD, it can help to protect the immune system whilst helping to bring it back to a balance. In doing so, bringing a balance to the various systems in the body may benefit the body when it comes to fighting off illnesses and viruses.

The endocannabinoid system works by binding with receptors in the body to help the body to achieve homeostasis, these receptors help to regulate functions in the body such as sleep, appetite, fertility, mood, the metabolism and immune system.

This as a result may aid the body in fighting off antibodies, when combined with a healthy lifestyle and a combination of essential nutrients and the recommended amount of exercise.
